Hello!

My name is Helen Palla and I'm from Tabasalu Gymnasium form 11 in Estonia. This year in the beginning of march we made a small research work on the economy of electrical energy.

We studied the using of electricity in our homes during a week when people used electricity following their habbits. By the investigation people used electricity - according to the size of the houses or appartments and the number of people living there - from 21 kWh to even 918 kWh.

After that week we tried to save electricity. So we used radiators less, windows were kept closed, food wasn't cooked at the maximum heat all the time, after leaving the room the lights, radio and TV were turned off. In case boilers were used, the water wasn't let to run uselessly. In houses the streetlights were turned off late night. Freezers were melted in order to consume less electricity. People used showers not bathtubs. Coffee machines weren't left switched on during whole day.

During that week people used electricty from 20 kWh to 758 kWh. So the economy of electrical energy was from 1 kWh to 160 kWh. Because the price of electricity gets higher is the saving very important. Electrical energy cost 60 cents per kWh and before it was 45 cents.

We plan to do the same in school next year. To save electricity in schools lights should be turned off in classrooms and corridors, where they are not needed, or the number of lamps should be reduced. The lights should be turned off in classrooms when daylight is enough. In the cafeteria heating of stoves should be reasonable and not work uselessly. Teachers should take care of switching off the radios in the class during the lesson.

Okay, I would like to thank you for your attention and lets all try to save electrical energy!

Helen Palla
