Subproject work plan

1) Name of the school: Kalevankangas secondary school, Mikkeli

2) Title of the subproject: Energy consumption inventory and potential sources of energy savings at the Kalevankangas secondary school

4) Schedule

The main part of the work will be done during the 2nd period in the autumn term 97, October 1 - November 27. Analysing the information and writing an energy saving plan for the school will take place during the 3rd period in the autumn term 97 and in the spring term 98, November 28, 1997 - February 2, 1998.
 

5) Implementation

The subproject will be implemented as a part of the school curriculum in the form of 1 0 small projects, each dealing with a different aspect of energy saving and assigned to a team of pupils. The energy consumption inventory including the appropriate measurements will be made during the 2nd period. The data gathered will be processed and analysed and an energy saving plan compiled during the 3rd period. Email contacts with other schools of the project will take place at both implementation stages. The 3 evaluation / documentation steps will be implemented as scheduled by the Coordinator.

The small projects are:

- team 1: annual consumption of thermal and electric energy
- team 2: annual water consumption
- team 3: water consumption of different toilet and shower devices
- team 4: energy consumption of different electric appliances, such as overhead projectors, TV sets, sewing machines, freezers, refrigerators, VCRs and lamps
- team 5: power consumption of electric appliances at various levels of age
- team 6: daily operating times of electric appliances
- team 7: power consumption and operating times of electric appliances in home economics classrooms
- team 8: impacts of lowering the room temperature of the schoolhouse at weekend and holiday times
- team 9: consumption of different papers
- team 10: cost-efficiency of centralised catering vs. school kitchen
 
 
6) Methods

- gathering basic information from various sources
- determining the annual consumption of electricity and water by consulting the technical staff of Mikkeli City
- measuring and following up the water consumption (frequency and time of use) of toilets and showers, the power consumption of electric appliances (kWh meter) and the consumption of different papers - determining the cost-efficiency of new and old electric appliances
