4) Schedule
As a part of the subproject, a lichen survey was carried out in Pieksämäki
by a group of 2nd and 3rd grade pupils in spring 97. The purpose of the
survey was to evaluate the air quality of Pieksämäki by comparing
the results with those of a similar survey from 1988.
Small projects 1 - 8 will be implemented in August - November 97,
numbers, 9 and 10 in October - November 97.
5) Implementation
The subproject will be implemented in the form of 1 1 small projects
integrated in the school curriculum and carried out by teams of 2 - 30
pupils. The 3 evaluation / documentation steps will be implemented as scheduied
by the Coordinator. The processes and outcomes will be reported in writing
and as posters where applicable.
The small projects are:
- team 1: the significance of bogs to climate protection and energy
saving; climatic impacts of natural vs. ditched bogs; economic impacts
of using bog peat as a fuel
- team 2: the significance of forest ecosystems to climate protection
and energy
saving
- team 3: waste recycling at the school: present state and areas
of improvement; survey and improvement plan
- team 4: the environmental impacts of the 2 (thermal and electric)
power plants run by the Pieksämäki Energy Company (see also No.
1 0)
- team 5: bird migration survey; migratory birds and energy saving
- team 6: green house effect
- team 7: atmospheric ozone and life
- team 8: the Moilanen Bakery; energy consumption and waste management;
the life cycle of bread
- team 9: energy consumption with different means of travelling
to and from school; survey and energy efficiency analyses; energy saving
plan
- team 10: air pollution and fallouts in the vicinity of the 2 power
plants (see No. 4)
- team 11: lichen survey (see above)
